The building on the far left is the Muskingum County Courthouse. The Muskingum County Courthouse was designed by T.B. Townsend and H. E. Myer, and built in 1877 with stone, brick, and slate in th Italianate style. The site served as the capitol of Ohio from October 1, 1810, until May 1, 1812, and the 9th and 10th sessions of the Ohio General Assembly met here at the building that was formerly at the site before those sessions were returned to Chillicothe in May 1812. The former building on the site was then used as the Muskingum County Courthouse until current one was constructed in 1874. The 1809 date stone from the old building was incorporated into the new building and may be seen over the front step The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. This building was originally constructed in 1809 with funds donated by Dr. Increase Mathews, Levi Whipple, and Ebenezer Buckingham, in Putnam, which was then a separate and rival community. Built of sandstone from nearby Putnam Hill, it was originally meant to serve as the new state capitol building. John McIntire and others constructed a building of their own to compete for the honor. State legislature selected Zanesville to serve as the capital of Ohio from 1810 to 1812, and the Putnam building became a school and held many public functions. The State Abolition Society held meetings there in 1835 and 1839, and it also served as a station on the Underground Railroad. In 1840, it was converted to a private residence and was the childhood home of author, actress and activist Elizabeth Robins. Sometimes called The Robins House, the 2-story stone building was left to the Pioneer and Historical Society in 1983 by Mrs. Richard (Lydia McHenry) Taylor and it has served as a museum since. Description: Exterior photograph of the Dr. Increase Mathews House. Located on 304 Woodlawn Avenue in Zanesville, the Increase Mathews House is Muskingum County's oldest building. Dr. Mathews was an early medical doctor in Zanesville who purchased land near the Muskingum River in 1801 and built a single story sandstone house on this land four years later. He inhabited the home for fifty-one years, and added two stories to this cottage in 1884. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: The Photo is of downtown New Philadelphia. Several historic buildings are noticeable especially the County Courthouse near the center of the photo. Residents named the town after Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Once formed in 1804. One of the principal reasons for this quick growth was New Philadelphia's location on the Ohio and Erie Canal, making the community an important trading center. Over the next several decades, New Philadelphia's status as a trading and manufacturing center continued to expand, especially following the completion of two railroads through the community. In 2000, many of New Philadelphia's 17,056 residents worked in retail sales, although several also found employment in service industries, and a few people still worked in mining. Several residents commuted to Canton, in nearby Stark County, to find employment. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This photograph of the Ohio State School for the Blind was taken from behind the school in the 600th block of Bryden Alley. The school stood at 240 Parsons Avenue and was built in 1839 as the nation's first public school for the visually impaired. After the school moved to its current location at 5220 N. High St, the Ohio State Highway Patrol was stationed at the building. Currently the facility is the location of the Columbus Health Department. The Ohio State Institution for the Education of the Blind was established in April of 1837 and by July of 1837 began instruction in rented rooms. The first school building was built in 1839, and could accommodate sixty students.This photograph, ca. 1935-1943 shows the four story sandstone structure in the Second Roman style of architeture with a Mansard roof. It is located on the corner of Parsons Avenue, and East Main Street in Columbus, Ohio and first opened it's doors on May 21, 1874. The building has undergone several renovations, and once had a central tower reached an additional three stories, and pointed spires on the north and south ends. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This photograph shows an aerial view of the east central industrial area of Mansfield, Ohio. At the center is Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Company. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Caption reads: "Netherland Plaza Hotel. Hall of Mirrors." The Art Deco style Netherland complex, which included the Netherland Plaza Hotel, the Carew Office Tower, and the Emery Arcade, was designed by architect Walter W. Ahlschlager with contributions from William Delano. The ground level shopping arcade, which served as the main lobby of the complex, spanned the distance of a city block, connecting to the offices on one end and the hotel on the other. Conceived by civic leader John J. Emery, Jr to revive the downtown area as a city center, the complex took the place of an Emery hotel, an Emery shopping arcade, and a popular department store. The structure was constructed and decorated in a little over a year, and completed in 1931 during the Great Depression. The complex was listed as a National Historic Landmark in 1994.
